It’s an interesting one, while most football fans follow their own club on social media, football supporters also follow a number of EPL and WSL club’s on Twitter or regularly see their tweets appear on their feed. Whether it is a meme, a viral tweet, a new signing, match day commentary, informative information regarding tickets, matches or player news, a timeline on Twitter can be quickly filled up with all 20 Premier League Clubs and at least a couple of the WSL club’s official Twitter accounts.
Every Twitter is different. Every social media manager has a different target audience they want to impress or demographic they want to conquer. Some have targets of a set amount of followers. Some have to remember that the football club is still a business, and some just want to have fun. some have to constantly drive traffic to the club’s website so fans can read articles, watch videos, buy merchandise or wait in a very long queue to purchase match day tickets (prior to a certain Miss Corona). Twitter is a tool for promotion, connection, information, and sponsorship. The power of Twitter is huge, not just for already established EPL clubs but also for the growth of women’s football.
Twitter has always intrigued me, so when it came down to choosing a topic to analyse for my dissertation I knew exactly what I wanted to investigate. After researching how Premier League and Women’s Super League clubs use Twitter for 8 months for my masters dissertation, I thought it was about time I finally shared some results on just how a selection of Premier League and WSL clubs’ use Twitter.
As a bit of a disclaimer, no club will be named and I analysed two weeks worth of tweets in February 2020 prior to coronavirus. My final mark for my dissertation was a distinction.

An additional club, ‘GW’ was also analysed. However due to not being able to interview the social media manager at GW for the purpose of these results I have not included them. GW was included because the analysis focused on 25% of Premier League and therefore with GW’s inclusion 25% of WSL club’s as well.
If you want to find out more about my results, then feel free to email me or contact me on Twitter.
